Port Lincoln Fishing Report – Wednesday 7th May 2024

We can’t really complain about the great fishing weather right now but we do need a bit rain and a big blow wouldn’t hurt either but there are still plenty of good fish out there. Coffin Bay has been the fishing hotspot for a few weeks now with some great fishing there. Whiting, Salmon, Flathead, Tuna and Nannygai are just a few of the great fish that are around there now.

Whiting fishing has been a bit tougher for some in the eastern part of the EP but it is breeding time for the Whiting. Squid and big Garfish have been making up for the lack of Whiting numbers.

Here’s what has been biting around the coast in the last week.

Elliston

News has been a bit quiet over the last week with not much filtering through. There have been a few Salmon reports from Locks Well and Sheringa but that’s about it. The weather has been too good not to get out offshore and there would be all the good offshore fish out there like Nannygai, Blue Morwong and Gummy Sharks. There’s probably plenty more out there and the offshore fishing should be just as good out from Streaky and Ceduna.

Venus Bay has been good for Whiting and there’s also Salmon Trout and Tommies.

Coffin Bay

There’s a really good mixture of fish here right now and you don’t have to go too far from the town. There’s Whiting, Tommies, Garfish, Salmon Trout, Flathead and Gummy Sharks all within the bays, land based and boat fishers can all get in on the action.

Farm Beach is firing for Whiting and there’s been so many great reports recently, the fish are spread right out now but the best sized fish are found in the deeper water grounds out from the fence line and Gallipoli. There’s also Salmon Trout, Tommies, Snook and some Gummy Sharks which have mostly been caught in the deeper water.

Offshore there’s still plenty of Tuna, they can be found much closer now than they were over summer. Reef Head to Point Whidbey is the main area, but the fish can be very flighty and they are feeding on small bait fish. Suggested lures for these Tuna are the SFT Tukumis, Jackson G Controls, Halco Laser Pro Dirty Harrys and  TNT in the 140 size and small skirts. Tuna are also out Rocky and Greenly Island and are much easier to catch but much smaller., most are around 6kg but there’s patches of 10-11kg fish. Nannygai, Blue Morwong, Sharks, Kingfish and Samson fish are also out there and getting caught offshore.

For Salmon Gunyah to Golden Island is the hotspot right now and has been for the last month, there is no shortage of Salmon here and lure casting has been the best method for catching Salmon. Flathead are also another great fish to catch right now and in the National Park between Yangie Bay and Point Sir Isaacs there have been some excellent fish caught, fish over 60cm have been caught recently and mostly on soft plastics with Jackson Bone Baits, Daiwa Bait Junkies and Shimano Squidgy Prawns.

Port Lincoln

Off the jetties there’s Squid, Tommies, Salmon Trout and the odd Whiting. The caravan park jetty is worth a try for big Garfish on the nice calm mornings. In the bays Squid is probably the best bet with quite a few good reports in the last week. Whiting haven’t really fired but they are there, and you can get enough for a feed, the North Shore and the Proper are the best areas. There are also good numbers of Garfish and night time dabbers are catching good numbers. Flathead numbers do seem to be quite good in the National Park and also along the North Shore but no monster’s, just average sized fish.

Further down the coast Whiting and Squid are down in the Passage and at Thistle Island, the fishing has been steady down there for them. Offshore there’s good numbers of big Nannygai, Blue Morwong, School Sharks and the odd Samson fish. Tuna are very hard to find and there’s been no reports here for some time.

For Salmon they are spread right out along the Sleaford Coast with better reports coming in now, this should be the start of the season now and they should be there consistently right into Spring. Lure fishing has again been popular with Jackson Metal Effects, Arma Twist and the Nomad Ridge Backs just some of the killer metals to cast at Salmon.

Tumby Bay

There’s been some decent Flathead caught recently from the beaches south of Tumby Bay for the lure casters and some small Salmon. Some of the rocky points with deeper water close by have produced Garfish and some big Squid. Boat news has been all out at the Group with some Whiting fishers finding it hard going and others going really well, it’s just that breeding time of the year and if you find the Whiting fishing slow, there is also Squid, Snook and some Trevally out there to compensate.

Port Neil & Arno Bay

Whiting and Squid are all the news for boat fishers this week from both areas. The Whiting have been generally really good-sized fish. Jetty fishers are catching Squid from the Port Neill jetty but not much other land-based news from this area.

It looks like a really good weekend to get out on the water if you don’t have any sport commitments this weekend. Plenty of fish out there to be caught land based or in the boat, drop in store and we can help you with all your fishing needs.
