Port Lincoln Fishing Report – Wednesday 23rd October 2024

There’s been some magic weather recently for fishing after such a windy period and hopefully most of you keen fishers were able to get out there and make the most of it.

There’s been some great catches with Whiting and big Garfish taking centre stage this week with these fish turning up in many areas. Offshore fishing has also been great with some excellent Nannygai catches and then there’s Salmon from the surf beaches.

For all the news over the last week read on.

Elliston

There’s Salmon from most of the surf beaches around Elliston with Talia Beach having the best reports where there are also Sharks like a few small Bronzies and the odd Gummy Shark. The jetty at Elliston is worth a go for some of the big Garfish that are found there.

Venus Bay jetty has Tommies, some Squid and a few Whiting. For boat fishers here there are some decent numbers of Whiting.

Offshore fishers in the Elliston to Streaky Bay area are finding some monster Nannygai, Blue Morwong and Sharks. Out from Flinders Island its also worth a go for Kingfish and Samson fish as there should be some rippers out there now.

Coffin Bay

There’s been mixed reports from Coffin Bay, locals are catching plenty, but tourists do seem to be struggling. For any struggling tourist just get the right information on the area you are fishing. What works on the east coast for fish over there doesn’t, always work over here, you do need the right bait, rigs, rods and reels and there’s plenty of help out there at local shops, boat ramps, fish filleting tables etc.

What you can expect from around Coffin Bay right now is Whiting, Snook, Tommies, Salmon Trout and some big Garfish in the bays, land based and boat fishers can all get in on the action.

Farm Beach is fishing well there’s been plenty of Whiting caught from many areas with the Sandhills one of the best areas, there is also Garfish here, Snook and some nice sized Squid also. There’s still also some decent sized Flathead caught by those with soft plastics at the beaches around the Morgans Landing to Point Sir Isaacs. Cast Prodigy soft plastics have been one best for Flathead with the Disco Chicken colour one of the best.

Reef fishers out from Point Sir Isaacs have been doing well on Nannygai and there’s been a couple of good reports of a few big Blue Morwong also being caught. If you’re using Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs you will increase your chances of a good catch.

Salmon are still a good bet of Gunyah and Almonta beaches and they sound like they are good size.

Port Lincoln

There’s some good fishing reports and they are getting better each week now. Squid have been better from the jetties and you should be able to get a feed at least, early morning and late afternoons are the best times. There should be some good-sized Garfish and also some Whiting now getting caught off of the town jetty and main wharf. It won’t be too long now, and we might start to see a few small Kingfish off of the jetties and also in the Marina so be ready for them.

Boat fishers are catching some decent fish now in the bays with Whiting, Garfish and Squid which have been the main catch. The North Shore and Spalding Cove sound like the best areas.

Down the coast there are also plenty of Whiting in the Passage and also Thistle Island, most of these fish are big ones.

Offshore fishing has been good again for big Nannygai with some whoppers caught and also big Blue Morwong. There’s been at least one big Tuna caught in the last week and one boat sighted a good school of these big Tuna on a flat calm day but was unable to get them take any lure or bait. Having a bit of wind and swell probably helps them bite better. These fish were here until mid November last year and if want a crack them before they leave you better make plans soon.

Some of the best lures to have a Bonze Exocets in the Reactor colour and Troll So Hard Green Evil and the Lumo Green. Spreader bars and caisy chains are also a big help bringing up the fish to your lure. Salmon are still going very well along the south coast with some good catches reported. There also quite a few Bronze Whalers that are following the Salmon and most are big ones.

Tumby Bay

The jetty reports are good for Squid and you should be able to also pick up a few nice Garfish there as well. There’s been some excellent reports out at the Group with some big Whiting getting caught out there and in good numbers. There is also Garfish, Snook, Trevally, some big Squid and the odd Gummy Shark also. In closer many of the inshore grounds are also great for Whiting, Garfish and Snook.

Port Neill and Arno Bay

The jetties are good for Garfish and Squid but boat news this week has been quiet. There should be plenty of Whiting, Garfish, Snook and Squid for the boat fishers. We have heard that the news from Cowell is that there are plenty of good Whiting from grounds south of Cowell, all mostly fish 40cm plus and very easy to find.

The weather is looking ok for the next week but the mornings seem to be the best at the moment.
