Fishing Report - Wednesday 1st April 2026

The Easter break is just upon us and weather wise; it doesn’t look too bad. There will be a few good days to be able to get out on the boat but if you can’t there’s some pretty good land-based fishing right now at the moment and the fish are playing the game.
Most areas around the coast are firing with certain species of fish, make sure you also know the fishing rules as his is important over the busy Easter period. There are areas that do still have lower bag limits for Squid and Whiting. Whether you agree or disagree with the rules they are in place and fisheries will be out checking fishers this weekend.
The areas that are affected with Whiting and Squid bag limit cuts are also spoiled with plenty of Garfish and big Snook and we consistently hear all the time that Whiting are boat limits caught very quickly and if this is the case then you have plenty of time to fish for other species which you may not have previously targeted. There are many more fishers doing this and enjoying catching a mixed bag. If you have kids out fishing with you generally they don’t care what they are catching as long as they are having a good day out.

So here is what has been biting over the last week.

There hasn’t been any beach news this week for Salmon, but it is well worth trying all beaches if you’re after Salmon, there will be fish at all major surf beaches in the area. Talia will be a popular area over easter as always and along with Salmon there’s a good chance of big Flathead, Gummy and Bronze Whaler Sharks will also be swimming along in the gutters there.
Boat fishers have plenty of options with Whiting on the inshore grounds and big Snook and then offshore there’s good fishing for Nannygai, Blue Morwong, Samson fish and Sharks including Gummies, School, Bronze Whalers and Makos.
The good offshore fishing continues further up the coast to Streaky Bay and beyond where there are still good numbers of Tuna. Most of the bays like Venus, Baird, Steaky and Smoky Bay all have good reports for the smaller stuff like Whiting, Salmon Trout, Garfish and Tommies but depending on where you are fishing there’s also Flathead, Squid, big Snook and Blue Crabs.

Flathead season is here and in full swing, there’s been trophy size 60cm plus fish caught in the area this week along with plenty of smaller sized fish. Soft plastics have been the way to go with brighter colored plastics going really well. Some of the most popular plastics have the Jackson Bone Baits, Arma Paddle Tails, Nomad Prawns and the Panic Station Mullet. If you need to know more drop into the shop and we can point you in the right direction.
There are also some good numbers of Whiting and you don’t have to travel far in the boat or even need a boat as there is good fishing off of the rocks in the area. Vexed Micro Meat jigs and the Z-Man plastic worms work well for Whiting and these are great for travelling fishers who don’t want to use bait or have very limited space for bait. Tommies, Garfish, Salmon Trout and Snook can all be caught within the bays.
This time of the year is excellent for Gummy Sharks and you can hook onto multiple Gummies in a session at this time of the year. Out at Farm Beach there’s Whiting, Salmon Trout, Tommies, Garfish and Snook, the water is still discolored but the fish are still there and biting. There’s been multiple big Gummy Sharks caught here in the deeper water, many of the really big ones will be pregnant females and it will be best to let these ones go and take a smaller one or of the many school sharks in the area.
Out deeper Tuna are biting at Greenly Island and Rocky Island, the mornings are best and lures like the Halco TNT, Dirty Harry’s and Napalms have been excellent. There’s also big Samson fish and a few Kingfish getting jigged up on JT Jigs and Buku Flutter Bombs. The reefs also hold good numbers of Nannygai and Blue Morwong. For Salmon Almonta Beach is the place to be with good reports there this week, Greenly Beach is also good and also Point Drummond and Hall Bay has roaming schools of Salmon, easily caught casting metal lures around.

Squid fishing has improved vastly in recent weeks around most jetties and rock areas in Port Lincoln have Squid and be are that you can only catch 6 Squid not 12. The orange YoZuri jigs have been lethal on the Squid. Salmon Trout and a few small Salmon are also regulars down at the main wharf and the rocks at Billy Light also has Salmon.
Whiting fishing should be good right now off of the rocks at Tulka and along the North Shore, there hasn’t been many reports yet, but right now there will be fish in these locations. With big afternoon tides coming up over the weekend it will be well worth trip. Blue crabs are still in good numbers around Port Lincoln and won’t be here for to much longer if you want to get a few don’t wait to long, the Proper and out from the Limani are great areas but there are plenty of other spots.
Garfish are going well right throughout the bays as are Snook with plenty around and then there is Squid around Boston Island and Whiting are also biting in a number of areas. Further down the coast Whiting are good at Taylors and Thistle Island and there’s big fish there.
Offshore fishing has been good for Nannygai on the reefs south of Thistle and Williams Island. Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs have been the way to go for the Nannygai and you can also pick up some Blue Morwong, Sharks and Samson fish. Snapper haven’t been as bad in the last week.
Salmon fishing in the national park has been ok, there is still good numbers of Salmon there but they have just been out a bit further. Good casting lures are a must and you can’t go past the Buku Flutter Bombs and Arma Nuggets for the castability. There is still quite good numbers of Bronze Whaler Sharks down there.
Flathead are also starting to show up from the beaches in the national park mostly smaller sized ones, but you never know what you will catch.

Yellowfin Whiting are showing up in reasonable numbers off of the beaches around Tumby and mostly caught on bait but Daiwa Slippery Dog lures have also accounted for quite a few. It will also be well worth trying for Flathead now and the beaches south of Tumby should be holding some good ones and casting soft plastics around will be go.
The Group again is where the best place is for good Whiting. There’s been more good sized fish here with fish over 50cm reported again this week with plenty of smaller fish in the 40cm range. There’s also Salmon in some areas as well as Trevally, big Snook, Garfish and Tommies. Squid news is still a little bit light.
In closer there is good Whiting and Garfish to be caught, Snook will be around in good numbers and also there should be a few Gummy Sharks around for night time fishers.

Yellowfin Whiting have once again been the main fish reported from these area, all beaches sound like they are fishing well for these fish. Garfish are also going well from both areas and the jetty at Port Neill is great for land-based fishers. The boat fishers will be able to find a feed of fish including Whiting, Garfish and Snook and a few Squid also.
