Spring is here, the days are longer and getting warmer and the fishing will get better, the weather has been better also in the last week. Salmon, Whiting and some great offshore reef fish have been the main reports in the past week and looking forward there should be some great fishing to come in the weeks ahead.
Here’s what has been caught over the last week.
Elliston
The Salmon comp is over for another year with some good fish once again caught, well done to all those that gave it good go, there has been some good sized fish caught recently in the range of 4kg plus. There will be more big fish caught right in to September and October which are regarded by many as probably the best time to get the really big Salmon.
All the good beaches have Salmon but Locks Well and Talia have been the best. Gummy Sharks have been caught at Sheringa and some monster Tommies also in the surf.
Further up the coast reports have been mixed, Squid are on the go around Streaky and Ceduna and Fowlers Bay has been the spot for 5kg salmon. There’s been a few fishers at Scott’s and Mexican Hat catching some big Salmon here as well.
Coffin Bay
In the bays there’s mostly Salmon Trout and Tommies that have been reported but there are also Whiting, a few Garfish and Snook shouldn’t be to far away. The water temperature should start to warm up shortly and that will bring an influx of more fish into the bays. Gummy Sharks are a good target at night and a good burley trail will get them going and now is a good time to target them before the Eagle Rays invade the bays.
Farm Beach reports for Whiting are still very strong, the Sandhill area seems to be one of the more popular areas to catch Whiting and there’s no shortage of them there. Tommies, Salmon Trout and the odd Flathead can also be caught there. Gummy Sharks are in the deeper water areas off of Farm Beach and at Coles Point there’s School Sharks and a few Nannygai.
Further offshore many of the reefs have been producing good sized Nannygai, Blue Morwong and School Sharks. Vexed Bottom Meat jigs have been excellent for these fish.
There is Salmon at most areas Gunyah, Almonta, Greenly and Convention Beaches. The reports are mixed, some really good catches and others just a few fish, but we are heading into the best few months of the year for Salmon fishing and the bigger fish should be making an appearance.
Port Lincoln
Not much land-based news but fishing should start to improve off of the jetties in thew next few weeks. Boat fishers have been finding Whiting at the North Shore, Boston Island and Spalding Cove. The best fishing is in the Passage. Carcase Rocks, McLarens, Taylors and Thistle all have fish and there are some good ones there too, you just have to get the bite time right and if you do then you should have no trouble finding some good fish. Vexed Micro Meat jigs have been excellent on the Whiting.
Offshore there’s been a few good reports with Nannygai, Blue Morwong and School Sharks being the most reported fish on the reefs, if you get a chance when the weather allows now is good time to get out there.
For Salmon there is still no shortage of Salmon along the Sleaford Coast, they are pretty well all along the whole area from Wanna to Wreck Beach, there are plenty of schools down there and Bronze Whaler Sharks aren’t too far away from the Salmon schools either. Lure fishing has been the go for the Salmon with the Jackson Metal Effects and Buku Flutter Bombs excellent lures to use.
Tumby Bay/Port Neill/Arno Bay
Whiting fishing has been the go in this area and it’s the only fish that has made the headlines from these three areas. Tumby has Whiting in close out in front of the town and even a few can be caught land-based off of the rocks south of Tumby but the Group is where all the really good reports have come from and there’s been few fish caught close to the 50cm mark.
Port Neill also has been slowly improving and Arno Bay has been good, only a few reports but very good ones from here and good-sized fish too.
