The weather is certainly warming up, and the fishing reports have been very good in recent weeks. In the no Squid areas, Spencer Gulf there’s been some really encouraging reports from many fishers with the number of Squid chasing up hooked Whiting. Around Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay in particular there’s been quite a lot seen and fingers crossed that the numbers are rebounding strongly.
Kingfish season is all go right now and just about all good Kingfish areas from Ceduna right around to Port Augusta have good numbers of inshore Kingfish. You don’t need a big boat or you can target these fish land based but you do need quality gear. These are one the toughest and smartest fish you will ever encounter.
Snapper numbers are in many areas right now and are being reported in a big way. From inshore Whiting grounds to offshore Nannygai drops all along the Peninsula there seems to be Snapper everywhere and all different sizes. If they are too numerous it’s best just to move on to somewhere else.
For everything else that’s been biting here are the hot spots.
Elliston
Salmon are still being caught off of the beaches around Elliston with Locks Well and Talia having some very good-sized fish. Gummy Sharks and School Sharks are also nightly visitors to these beaches and also at Sheringa. Boat news has been quiet but now is the time to start getting ready for the good weather days and head out offshore. There will be plenty of hungry reef fish on the reefs out there. Further up the coast good squid numbers have been reported at Streaky, Haslam and Ceduna, both boat and jetty fishers can get amongst it.
There’s been a few fishers asking about Mulloway further west but it’s still early. There might be a few out there but, in another month, it should be worth a trip. There are plenty of salmon and big ones, some 5kg plus, Taylor and Sharks as well.
Coffin Bay
It should really improve quite a lot soon with the warmer waters and that will bring in plenty of Tommies, Salmon Trout and Whiting, It is getting better and there are fish are around now. Snook and Garfish also won’t be too far away. Gummy Sharks are a good end of the day target and there’s a few getting around in the bays at night.
Farm Beach is fishing really well for Whiting and most grounds are good, the Z-Man plastic worms are great here and you can also pick up a few Flathead if they are around and there are also Tommies and Salmon Trout. The big Garfish won’t be too far away either.
Offshore fishing has been quite good on the good days Nannygai, a few Blue Morwong and School Sharks have been the most reported fish. For Salmon there’s not many beaches that don’t have them, Gunyah, Almonta, Greenly, Convention and Mount Drumond are the areas to fish for Salmon. There would also most likely be a few big Bronze Whaler Sharks hanging around the Salmon.
Port Lincoln
Land based fishing around town hasn’t really taken off just yet but Tommies and Salmon Trout are the main fish to chase off of the main wharf.
Boat news also hasn’t really taken off either in the bays but there are Whiting around and are getting caught, just not in any big numbers but enough for a feed, it will get better soon.
Carcase, Mclarens, Taylors and Thistle Island is a different story, there is some really good fishing here for Whiting and some really good fish mixed in. Snook, Red Mullet and Tommies are all there too and the Vexed micro meat jigs have been quite good in the deeper water combined with the new Vexed long shank circle hook.
Offshore there’s been some good Nannygai fishing around Williams Island late in the day but there are lots of Snapper here. School sharks and Blue Morwong are also on the bite and some of reefs offshore have been holding some big winter Samson fish.
For Salmon there’s still no shortage along the Sleaford Coast, big schools can be found all along the bay there. Lure fishing is probably the best option here with the Jackson Metal Effects, Arma Flash Harry’s and Jabbers Moxie Metals really good lures for targeting salmon.
Tumby Bay/Port Neill/Arno Bay
We have only had news from the Group recently and it’s fishing really well here. Good numbers of Whiting, Snook and Salmon seem to be around most islands in the area. There is Red Mullet and also Tommies. As for the other areas, news has been fairly limited, a few good Whiting reports from Arno Bay but not much else. The fishing will pick up very soon here and the reports are sure to be very good.
