Spring is not too far away now and already we are seeing the first signs of fish changing their behaviors and moving to different areas, feeding at different times, along with longer days and tide starting to shift towards a summer pattern. Some fishers are finding it harder to adjust and others are having some good catches. Whiting, Salmon and School Sharks are in good numbers from many areas but now there are many other fishers starting to get Kingfish ready and there have even been a few catches in the last week from regular Kingfish spring haunts along the west coast.
Here’s what has been biting.
Elliston
Its Salmon city here, Locks Well & Talia have both been firing. Sheringa and Mount Camel also have had their fair share of Salmon. There’s plenty of other small stuff from these beaches, like big Tommies, Mullet and the odd Flathead. School Sharks can be caught from a few of the beaches with Sheringa and Talia the best of them with the nightime fishing being the best time for the Sharks, you can find a few Gummies here also.
Boat news has been very lean from Elliston and further west, but if Squid is your thing Ceduna Squid reports are said to be quite good compared with other areas. Fowlers Bay is also loaded with Salmon, and this is where you will find the big ones, 4-5kg fish.
Coffin Bay
In the bays there’s a handful of Whiting, Salmon Trout and some Tommies, not much else has been reported but you can find some Gummy Sharks late afternoon and into the night. Using a bag of fish heads to get them in and you should be able to get 1 or 2 to bite. Fresh Salmon chunks are also a good bait to use.
Farm Beach is still very reliable for Whiting and we have had good reports from most areas and the Sandhills is one of the best areas but you don’t need to go that far. The Z-Man worms have been working well in shallower areas and there are Tommies and a few Snook if you troll around.
Coles has School Sharks and A few Nannygai in the deeper water areas but not much else has been reported from the offshore areas. The smaller Vexed bottom meat jigs have been good for the Nannygai.
For Salmon reports haven’t been as good this week, Gunyah and Almonta do have schools of fish there but most have been out of casting range. Greenly and Convention beaches are a better option and there has been better reports from this area.
Port Lincoln
For Whiting the best reports in the bays are from the North Shore and Spalding Cove, we haven’t heard of any fantastic reports but they are there if don’t want to do the miles. The best reports are from Carcase, McLarens, Taylors and Thistle and there are plenty of Whiting in these areas which all have different bite times. The most common theme is the run in tide seems to be the best time. Snook and some big garfish can also be found around McLarens and Taylors.
Offshore if you can get the weather on your side there are some good fish, there are a few Samson fish, some big Nannygai, Blue Morwong and School Sharks. Williams and beyond are the best areas. Like Coffin Bay Vexed bottom meat jigs have been quite good on the reefs.
For Salmon Sleaford is still loaded, you can use baits but with the big schools, lures are working great. Buku flutter bombs, Arma flash harrys, Jabbers moxie metals and the Daiwa saltiga over there stick baits are some of the best lures working.
Tumby Bay/Port Neil/Arno Bay
Only a bit news from this area this week and its all about Whiting, at Tumby there’s some good fishing not far from town either out in front or down south you will find some nice fish. The Group also has some good fishing for Whiting and the run in tide seems to be the best.
Port Neill has been a bit harder to find the Whiting but they are there and are scattered around and at Arno Bay this is where the monsters have been with fish to 48cm reported in the last few weeks. The beaches at Arno and Port Neill do have a few Flathead and also some Salmon around 1kg if you want to do something a bit different.
