The weather wasn’t the best this week with fishing reports slowing down quite a lot, there have been a few good days on the water and with the new fishing regulations now in place, land-based fishing is seen as a more economical way of fishing or fishers have been fishing closer to boat ramps now opting for shorter fishing sessions. As a result some of the land-based reports have been excellent.
Here’s what has been caught over the last week.
Elliston
Salmon are pretty good at Locks Well with good schools of big fish there. Talia also has some Salmon and a few big Flathead. Gummy and Bronze Whaler Sharks are going well at night or late in the afternoon.
Off the Elliston jetty which is partially opened there have been some monster Squid, big Tommies, Snook and Bronze Whaler Sharks. Venus Bay is a bit slower but there are Squid and Whiting on offer there. Streaky and Smoky Bays sound like there going well for Whiting, Snook, Garfish and Squid, some areas there also have some good-sized Trevally.
The beaches west of Ceduna sound like they are firing for Mulloway now with more good reports this week of multiple big Mulloway that have been caught in that part of the world. There’s also no shortage of Sharks, some big Salmon and a few big Taylor have also been pulled in.
Coffin Bay
Land based fishers have been finding some good sized Whiting in the bays around Coffin Bay, many are using the new Z-Man plastic worms and the Vexed micro meats jigs with great success just from the shore. Whiting really aren’t that hard to catch on plastics and jigs and you probably will be a better fisherman once you get the hang of using something different, and it is great fun. Garfish, Tommies, Salmon Trout, Snook the odd Flathead and also Gummy Sharks can be caught in the bays also, many all caught from the shore in the many areas available.
Boat fishers have been fishing the oyster leases and also Farm Beach for the same kind of fish and also Squid which can be caught in some of those areas.
For salmon Gunyah, Almonta, Greenly and Point Drummond all have Salmon to some degree, there are schools of fish off and on at these locations and can be a bit unpredictable at times but they are there. Lures and baits have both been working. At Greenly Island there has also been a massive Salmon school which the Salmon boat has been fishing and some of the biggest Salmon reported has weighed a whopping 7.2kg. A truly giant salmon which you don’t hear too much of these days. These offshore Salmon are by far the biggest you will probably ever come across.
Port Lincoln
Off the jetties there’s a mixture of Garfish, Tommies, Snook, Squid and some decent numbers of Whiting. The town jetty and the main wharf are the best spots and land based fishing is also excellent for Garfish. From the national park right up to Louth Bay there are multiple areas that are great for Garfish, if you can establish a good burley trail with tuna oil and bran a pollard you will get them around fairly quickly.
Boat fishers will also be able to find some good fishing in close around the bays with Snook, Whiting, Garfish, Tommies and Squid, most areas are well worth a look right now. If you do want to travel a bit further then the are plenty of fish down the Passage and at Thistle Island.
For Salmon there’s lots of fish around the 3kg mark at Sleaford Bay. Schools of fish are spread right out along the coast here closely followed by Bronze Whaler Sharks. You will need good casting lures like the Arma Nugget or Flash Harry which cast like a bullet and you might only get one or two fish at a time while the Sharks are on the schools, so be prepared to do some walking.
Tumby Bay
There are multiple areas south of Tumby that offer good Land Based fishing for Garfish. The Garfish here are usually all big ones and well worth chasing off of the rocks. Squid also can be good in many of these areas.
Boat fishing is good in close for Garfish, Squid, Snook, Tommies and Whiting, from right in front of town down to Bolingbroke there are plenty of areas here that offer good fishing. Out at the Group there is also plenty of good fishing reports mostly from around Spilsby Island where there are plenty of big Whiting, Squid, Snook and Trevally.
Port Neill & Arno Bay
These two areas are good to go here with some really good reports from both areas. Big Whiting, Snook, Tommies, Garfish and Squid are not that hard to catch for the boat fishers.
The jetties at Arno Bay & Port Neill have been quite good for Squid, Garfish and Snook, they are well worth a look. The beaches here might also be worth having look at for Yellowfin Whiting, they should be starting to show up in decent numbers now in these areas. Hopefully this summer there is an improvement in their numbers.
