Once again, the fishing reports from the past week have been excellent. Whiting, Salmon and for offshore fishers Nannygai and School Sharks are in excellent numbers.
Squid isn’t around in some areas like they should be but other than that it’s well worth getting out there. Spring is less than two weeks away now and we should see a big influx of fish moving around into summer grounds in around a month from now.
Here’s what has been biting over the last week.
Elliston
From this area and beaches further west its Salmon news mostly. All the beaches around Elliston have Salmon and if you’re after the truly big ones right now should be the prime time at Talia to catch something 5kg plus. At Fowlers Bay, Scotts Beach is firing and Mexican Hat also and most fish here will not be much smaller than 4kg and there will plenty of fish 5kg plus for those wanting a trophy sized Salmon.
Many offshore areas from Elliston to Ceduna are holding good numbers of big Nannygai, Blue Morwong, School and Gummy Sharks. The Big Nannies are biting well on the Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs.
Coffin Bay
In the bays the news has been a little slow with just a few Salmon Trout, Tommies and a few legal Whiting, it will pick up soon and the better fishing will only be weeks away. Farm Beach has been fishing well for Whiting with some very good reports, most areas are good with sandhills, one of the best areas with some decent size fish. There are Squid there also, Salmon Trout, Tommies, Red Mullet and a few Squid. There are Gummy Sharks and School Sharks around in the deeper water grounds from Frenchmans to Coles Point. Anchoring up in around 20 metres of water and getting a burley trail going will have a few Sharks sniffing around.
Land Based fishers can also find these Sharks off of the beaches and rocks in the same area. Salmon fishing is excellent right now with all areas fishing well. Gunyah, Almonta, Greenly and Convention Beaches all have good Salmon fishing, the size of fish varies from 1-4kg depending on where you fish with the best fish over the last week coming from Gunyah and Greenly Beach. Lure fishing has been popular with some of the better lures to use have been the Jabbers Moxie Metals, Arma Twist and the good old Laser lures also have been good Salmon catchers. Baits also have been working in conjunction with Pilchard burley blocks.
Port Lincoln
Squid are hard going at the moment for land-based areas around town and there’s not too many other reports either, just a handful of Tommies off the main wharf. In another few weeks there should be plenty more fish starting to turn up with rising water temperatures.
Boat fishers are finding some Whiting around the bays with the North Shore, Boston Island and Proper all having some Whiting. Boat fishers are finding some Squid, but the going has been tough.
Down the Passage it’s a different story, there’s plenty of Whiting with some up to 50cm, and plenty of Squid and some are monsters. Thistle Island is also has been very good fishing and you will also find good numbers of Snook which like the new Nomad Jerk Squid soft plastics, Red Mullet and a few Tommies as well.
Offshore just a few Nannygai and School Sharks were reported, the weather looks ok later in the week and over the weekend at this stage for another crack at some offshore fishing.
For Salmon there’s no shortage along the south coast, from Wanna right through to Wreck Beach there’s Salmon with bait fishers and lure fishers all getting in on the action. The Salmon have also been responding well to burley for the bait fishers and will take lures too once they get fired up.
Tumby Bay
Whiting fishing has been very good from many areas around Tumby, in close you can try right out the front of town right down to Bolingbroke, Whiting can be found all along this part of the coast. Vexed Micro Meat Jigs have been particularly effective on the Whiting resulting in quicker catches. There are also some decent numbers of Snook and also Squid here too.
The Group has also been quite good for Whiting with some good fish here to 50cm that have been reported in recent weeks. Not too many fishers who have been here have not done well on the Whiting. You can also find Trevally, Snook, Red Mullet, Squid and a few Gummy Sharks here.
