Good weather, plenty of fish, school holidays what more could you ask for. The fishing has been great and there’s been plenty of fishers out there chasing the $10,000 fish. Unfortunately for local fishers we missed out on the $10,000 and $5,000 dollar fish but one lucky fisher took out the third tagged fish and scored himself $2,500. There will be more of these tagged fish competitions in the future so keep an eye out for the next round.
Here’s what has been biting over the last week.
Elliston
Not too much news from Elliston region this week but with the few reports that we have had they have been good. At Sheringa there’s Salmon off of the Salmon beach and then there’s some Whiting, Flathead, Mullet and some big Tommies off of the first beach. Walkers Rocks is similar but this is where some good Flathead being caught. The soft plastic Arma Paddle Tails have been excellent here, the pink or orange coloured ones have been best.
Offshore there’s big Nannygai, Blue Morwong and Sharks, Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs have been the best way to catch these fish.
Coffin Bay
There’s plenty of fish here right throughout the whole area. In the bays there’s been Whiting, Tommies, Garfish, Salmon Trout and Snook. Flathead have been a very popular target but many new fishers trying to catch their first Flathead have been struggling. All I can say is stick at it, the first is always the hardest and if you get really stuck we do have some very experienced staff who can point you in the right direction.
Gummy Sharks are also a good target but Snapper have been a pest in some areas, probably stay away from the Coffin Bay channel and Dutton Bay to avoid them. The Oyster leases at Longnose have plenty of fish also with all of the above biting hard there, the big Garfish there are worth fishing here.
Farm Beach has had good reports also again with no shortage of Whiting and most areas have been fishing well. Garfish, Tommies, Snook and a few Flathead can also be caught in the boat. Gummies and School Sharks can be caught off of Coles Point down to Frenchman’s in the deeper water. Getting a good burley trail going will get them coming in.
Offshore this week most of the reports have been for Nannyagi, Blue Morwong and Sharks there’s hasn’t much else reported but there would be Tuna and Kingfish around Rocky and Greenly Islands. For Salmon Greenly has been good and also Almonta beaches with plenty of fish here.
Port Lincoln
There is no shortage Salmon Trout and small Salmon around off of the jetties and there’s been some decent sized Whiting off the town jetty and Axell Stenross. Squid haven’t been as good but most of the jetties all have Squid and you should be able to bag a few for a feed. The rocks at Tulka are producing some nice Whiting and there are a few rat Kingfish raiding the shallows as well terrorizing the Garfish in the area. Flathead are being caught off the beaches in the National Park, you do need to prepared to walk a bit to find them and have a good range of soft plastics. Some of the better ones are the Arma Paddle Tails, Jackson Bone Baits, Nomad Prawns and Daiwa Bait Junkie 5” Jerk Shads.
Boat Fishers are finding plenty of Salmon Trout and small Salmon at the ship yard and Whiting, Garfish, Snook, Tommies and Squid right throughout the bays. Blue Crabs are still hanging in there and you will get a feed of Crabs if you get out there and give it go and they are still a good size.
Down the coast Taylors and Thistle Island have no shortage of Whiting, big Tommies, Snook and a few Squid the Vexed Micro Meat jigs are all you need for the Whiting.
Offshore there’s plenty of Nannygai, a few Blue Morwong, Sharks and some big Bronze Whalers in some areas and also Samson fish which love the gold JT jigs.
For Salmon there’s still plenty along the Sleaford Coast, there are good schools of Salmon there and some big Sharks not far away from them. Lure fishing is best for them and the Arma Flash Harry and Nuggets are great casting lures, also the Jackson Metal Effects are very good too.
Tumby Bay
Get stuck into the Flathead off of the beaches south of Tumby Bay, its prime time and good tides to be out fishing for them. Squid are patchy but they can be caught there in decent numbers when you find them, there are some off of the jetty.
Boat fishers can find good Whiting and Garfish in close at Tumby and out at the Group there’s no shortage of Whiting and there is also Salmon, Trevally, Snook and Garfish.
Port Neill and Arno Bay
South of Port Neill on the beaches there are some good salmon schools, Flathead and Yellowfin Whiting which can be found on most beaches stretching up to Cowell where there heaps of them. For the Yellowfin Whiting the 10gm Vexed Bottom Worm Jigs are excellent for them and you don’t need any bait.
The jetties do have Squid, Garfish and some Snook and Port Neill is quite good. Boat fishers will be able to catch some good Whiting from both areas and Snook, Garfish and Tommies also. Blue Crabs were around Arno Bay a few weeks ago and there might still be a few around.
Snapper caught off of the town wharf, this is something we are hearing on many occasions in the store and they are becoming more and more prevalent around the EP. A stock assessment is due soon, lets hope the numbers stack up an we see some changes.
