It’s been good to finally get an extended period of nice calm weather for a change, plenty of fishers out there made the most of it and there’s been some impressive catches this week.
With plenty to report here’s what has been biting over the last week.
Elliston
Offshore fishing has been good for some cracker Nannygai, Blue Morwong, School and Gummy Sharks between Elliston and Streaky Bay. Elliston also has Samson Fish and Kingfish while at Streaky there is Tuna. Flathead are being chased in the same area off the beaches between Elliston and Steaky Bay with fish at Walkers Rocks and Streaky and give Haslam a go if you’re in the area this is a great spot for some good Flathead.
Salmon new has been quiet but there’s sure to be plenty around on the surf beaches but there is also some good fishing on the surf beaches past Fowlers Bay. Many of the surf beaches have big Salmon, Sharks and Mulloway.
Coffin Bay
There’s been some excellent Flathead reports over the last week in this area, it’s prime time to be out having a look for a Flathead and casting soft plastics around for the flathead is great fun. Some of the areas to look for Flathead are around the Frenchman’s area and also in the national park from Seven Mile Beach to Point Sir Isaac’s, there are plenty of other areas and sneaky fishers will also find some rippers right in around town and also Dutton Bay holds some good fish. Soft plastics like the Daiwa Bait Junkies, Jackson Bone Baits, Arma Paddle Tails and the Nomad Prawns are just some of the good ones Flathead love.
There’s been some good numbers of Whiting also within the town and those with small tinnies can also catch a feed very close to boat ramp. Salmon Trout, Tommies, Snook and Garfish can also be caught in the bays. There’s also some good numbers of Gummy Sharks and most are small ones but there’s been a few really good ones showing up also.
At Farm Beach the water is very murky and hard to see the bottom in some areas but there has been some good Whiting catches despite the murky water. Fish size has been good and in the deeper water fish over 40cm have been caught. There’s also been some big Gummy Sharks and School Sharks out from Coles Point and Frenchman’s.
Offshore areas have been fishing well with Greenly and Rocky Island the pick of the areas, there are Tuna here mostly biting best in the early morning and late afternoon. There’s been reasonable numbers of Samson fish around the reefs with Buk Flutter Bomb Jigs and JT Jigs the way to go for them and the Nannygai will also take them. Nannygai, Blue Morwong and Sharks can also be caught on most good reefs offshore.
For Salmon Greenly Beach area has again proven to be one of the better areas with the best numbers of Salmon reported.
Port Lincoln
Squid numbers have improved and there’s been some decent catches reported, one thing to remember is that the bag limit is 6 Squid per person and not 12, if you get caught by fisheries you will be punished. Hopefully Squid numbers recover and the limits go back to what they were and if your unsure of the bag limits check the PIRSA website for all the up to date info. Most Squid reported have been off of the jetties and boat ramps around town. There is are decent numbers of Salmon Trout around the main wharf and there should also be some Whiting around. Boat fishers are still picking up good numbers of Blue Crabs with plenty around and they can be found in many areas, the Proper is a very easy area to catch them and also in front of town to the Limani. There is are also good numbers of Snook and they have been around in good numbers for months now, trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures and Jackson G-Controls have been highly effective.
Whiting reports have been fairly slow but that’s more due to fishers getting into the Crabs but there should be some good numbers of Whiting in the Proper and also along the North Shore. There are already reports of Whiting full of roe coming from some areas so it would be worth going a little easy on the big fish and chasing the smaller ones while they are close to breeding.
Down the coast Whiting have been hit and miss and mostly due to water quality, the good reports have been excellent and bad ones really bad all around Thistle and Taylors and conditions can change daily.
Offshore tuna can be caught around the Neptunes and if you don’t find any drop down a Vexed Bottom Meat Jig for a feed of Nannygai and Blue Morwong. Some areas also have some big Samson fish which are all over the JT Jigs.
Salmon is still quite good along the South Coast but you have to be prepared to find them, they can really be anywhere along the coast there and once you find them cast lures into the school like the Buku Flutter Bombs or Arma Flash Harrys and you will hook onto a few.
Tumby Bay
There’s some good Whiting out at the Group with plenty of good ones reported again this week, the larger size Vexed Micro Meat jigs have been excellent in the deeper water areas for the Whiting. There’s plenty of other fish out there like big Snook and some decent sized Silver Trevally, there are also good numbers of big Garfish, Tommies and a few big Squid.
In closer you will also find some fish including Whiting, Garfish and Snook. Yellowfin Whiting are also on the menu here and they can be found on a number of beaches around Tumby, some big ones have been showing up recently.
Port Neil and Arno Bay
Yellowfin Whiting also feature here and the beaches here have been very good over the last month. Port Neill’s beaches have been the better beaches and there’s been some good numbers of fish caught both on baits and also by lure casters. The Daiwa Slippery Dogs and the Jackson EBI Panics are just some of the better lures. There’s also some good Flathead here and there’s plenty of beaches here to try.
Boat fishing is ok at both areas, Whiting, Snook and Garfish have been the main reported fish from both areas. North of Arno Bay towards Cowell Snapper can be a problem so don’t put out too much burley otherwise it will be all Snapper.
