One week to go and spring will be here. The weather is starting to warm up a little with a few days starting to hit the low twenties. Fishing reports have been steady and with some better offshore days recently there’s a bit more that’s been caught. Salmon and Whiting are still the main catches and Gummy and School Sharks also have been caught too.
Here’s what has been biting in the last week.
Elliston
Salmon fishing is still the main kind of fishing reported here, there is one week left to go in the Salmon comp and now is the time to make a late charge and catch that big one. Talia Beach has good ones and there’s been fish to 4kg here caught in the last few weeks. Locks Well has also been fishing very well with plenty of fish here, often schooled up in good numbers. Sheringa has been much quieter but there are some School and Gummy Sharks here off the beach at night and there are also some big Tommies off the beaches here as well.
Coffin Bay
There’s a few Whiting getting around in the bays but they can be hard going. Tommies and Salmon Trout are easier to find and casting small diving lures like Daiwa Double Clutches or soft plastics like the Z-Man slim swims will get hooked onto a few of these fish. Gummy Sharks are around in the bays at night if you get a bit of burley going and you shouldn’t have to wait too long.
Farm Beach has been consistent for Whiting for some time now and this week again there’s been more good reports. The Sandhills is pretty good but most other good areas are fishing well too. There are a few Flathead around if you fish in close to the shore.
Offshore there’s better reports this week with some nice Nannygai, Blue Morwong and School Sharks all being caught on the offshore grounds out from Point Sir Isaacs. Vexed Bottom Meat jigs are excellent for this kind of fishing.
For Salmon there’s a number of areas to look at, Gunyah and Almonta have Salmon if the conditions are good, Greenly Beach is more consistent for bait fishers and Convention Beach is also a good bait spot. You can find some good fish at these spots most around 2-3 kg but there are bigger ones to 4kg if you’re lucky.
Port Lincoln
Land based news has been fairly lean for a number of weeks now and there still isn’t too much going on just yet. It might be a few weeks away until things turn around for land-based fishers around Port Lincoln.
Boat news also isn’t great in the bays but there are fish around, Whiting have been caught along the North Shore, some around Boston Island and a few in Spalding Cove. Generally, you do have work for your fish in the bays.
The Passage is much better with all the main spots fishing reasonably well. Carcase Rock, McLarens, Taylors and Thistle all have some good Whiting fishing, the full moon isn’t too far away, and these areas usually hold some big fish at night on the August full moon. There’s always the chance of a nice Gummy Shark while you are at it. There is Snook around Taylors Landing and some good sized ones at that.
Offshore better fishing conditions have allowed a few boats to head past Williams Island where you can find some good-sized Nannygai, Blue Morwong, School Sharks and the odd Samson fish. For Salmon Sleaford still has some mega schools of Salmon. This would have to be one of the most consistent Salmon areas this winter. Lure fishing has been the way to go once you find a Salmon school and the Buku Flutter Bombs, Arma Flash Harrys and the Jabber Moxie Metals work brilliantly for the Salmon.
Tumby Bay/Port Neill/Arno Bay
Tumby has all the fishing reports this week with Whiting the main catch. The inshore grounds in front of Tumby and also out at the Group have been the areas with the best fishing. From what we have been told there’s some good fishing there.
Port Neill and Arno Bay reports have been very lean this week with not much to report, but Arno Bay has been fishing good for some big Whiting in recent weeks.
