The weather has been far from kind during the past week, and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping. It is Blowvember for a reason and soon it will hopefully calm down but there is some great fishing available and just about all regions have been firing.
Summer fish like Mulloway, Shark’s, Garfish and Snook are in full swing and it won’t be too long now and the first of the Tuna will start to move through within the next month and the offshore season will be in full swing.
There’s still plenty of areas to get out of the wind and catch a fish in the meantime and here’s what has been caught in the last week.
Elliston
Salmon reports this week have been few and far between off of the beaches around Elliston but that doesn’t mean that there are none around, it’s still worth taking a look. Locks Well has been the best beach in the area in previous weeks gone by.
Off the jetty there’s big Squid and Garfish, you will certainly catch a decent feed here. Talia Beach has Gummy and Bronze Whaler Sharks, mostly at night is when the Sharks are out. You will also find the odd Salmon and the odd big Flathead here.
Most jetties further west also hold some good fish, Streaky, Haslam, Smoky and Ceduna jetties are excellent and there’s a mixture of big Tommies, Garfish, Snook, Squid and a few Whiting that can be caught. It might also be worth dropping a Crab net for a few Blue Swimmers.
Boat news has been quiet this week and there’s been more good fishing off of the beaches west of Ceduna for Mulloway which seem to be consistent if you have decent weather when you are there. There is also Salmon and Sharks from the beaches to keep you on your feet.
Coffin Bay
There’s no shortage of fish here with plenty on the bite. Whiting, Garfish, Salmon Trout, Snook, Tommies and Gummy Sharks can all be caught within the bays here. Land based and boat fishers will be in for a good day of fishing and there are multiple land-based areas here to choose from, especially when the wind is up. Dutton Bay is good and also back in along the main channel. There is also Snapper around in the bays and if you’re chasing Gummy Sharks use a circle hook so the Snapper can be released easily.
Also, on the Snapper many of the offshore reefs out from Point Sir Isaacs, Reef Head and Coles Point are loaded with Snapper at this time of the year, they usually always are so its probably best to give this area a miss if you’re after Nannygai. The Snapper will thin out to better numbers before Christmas.
Around the oyster leases and Farm Beach Whiting fishing is excellent. The new Z-Man plastic worms are Whiting killers as are the Vexed micro meat jigs, these are excellent for Whiting and a bit more challenging than cockles on a hook. There’s also plenty of big Garfish, Tommies, Snook, Salmon Trout, the odd big Flathead and some Squid here as well. For Salmon all the beaches have them butt they are thinning out at Gunyah and Almonta, Greenly and Convention beach have better numbers of fish.
Port Lincoln
The jetty fishing is still very good with Whiting, Garfish, Snook and Tommies which can be caught, Squid are slow but are there. Early mornings and late in the afternoons are the best time for them. Garfish have been a good target for rock fishers all around Port Lincoln, the National Park and also at Louth Bay, get a burley trail going and use either live gents or the soft plastic ones and you should be able to catch a good feed. Boat fishers also will be able to catch much of all of the above.
Garfish are good along the North Shore and Snook are close by the Garfish, trolling diving lures like the Jackson G-Controls and Daiwa Double Clutch will get the Snook and there are some monsters out there.
If you get a chance to head further down the coast from Carcase Rocks down the Thistle Island there are plenty of areas to fish for Squid, Whiting, Snook and Garfish and there’s good numbers of all those fish down there. For Salmon there are some schools along the Sleaford Coast, some days there’s plenty other days they are few and far between. Lure fishing has been the most productive way of fishing with the new Arma Nugget and Flash Harry metal lures leading the way and the Jabbers Moxie Metals are also excellent, the fish are a good size, around the 3kg mark.
Tumby Bay
Off the jetty Squid and Garfish have been the main report and there should be some Snook also and a few Whiting. Garfish can be caught from the shore south of Tumby down to Moonlight Bay, most are all big ones.
Boat fishing is good in close with Garfish, Snook, Tommies, Whiting and Squid which can all be caught not far from town and relatively close to shore. The Group also is really good if you can get out there. Big Snook, big Trevally, Whiting, Garfish, Tommies and Squid can all be caught there. Out the back of the Group Gummy Sharks and Bronze Whaler Sharks aren’t to much trouble to find if use a bit of burley.
Port Neill/Arno Bay/Cowell
This area is excellent for Whiting, Snook, Garfish, Tommies, Yellowfin Whiting and Squid. Some of the standout reports are Garfish from around Port Neill and at Cowell the Yellowfin Whiting are excellent, inside the harbour and outside on the beaches there are plenty. Given that bag limit hasn’t been cut for the Yellowfin Whiting it might be worth having a look at these fish as they are good fun to catch and are a popular target on surface lures. Using the Jabbers Honcho stick baits and Barrumba flats dog lures you should be able to have good time fishing for these fish over the warmer months ahead.
