Weather conditions over the last week have been ok with some chances to get out on the water and catch some fish. Those that did manage a trip out there reported some good fishing. Most of the coast is producing some excellent fish with Salmon and Whiting the most reported fish from the last week.
There’s not many surf beaches that don’t have Salmon right now as we head into spring which is the best time of the year to catch the big ones.
Elliston
The offshore grounds from Elliston to Streaky Bay hold some really sized Nannygai, many of these reefs haven’t been fished much over winter so they are mostly all loaded up. Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs are excellent for these big Nannygai. Blue Morwong, School and Gummy Sharks can all be expected on these reefs as well.
The Salmon fishing has been excellent from a number of areas including Locks Well and Talia around Elliston and then further up the coast at Scotts Beach at Fowlers and also Tuckermore at Penong have some extra chunky Salmon, 4-5kg fish can be reasonably expected. The big fish like baits and big baits like Salmon fillets are excellent but lures are also great when a school of fish are visible.
Coffin Bay
In the bays you will find some Salmon Trout, Tommies and a few Whiting, rock fishers have been catching a few and those also with a small tinny will find enough for a feed. Farm Beach is fishing better with better numbers of Whiting catches over the weekend, some fishers said it was good and other said it was average. There’s also Tommies, Salmon Trout and some Squid.
Coles Point and Frenchman’s has some School and Gummy Sharks and you will also find a few Nannygai if you are lucky and the odd big silver Trevally. Those that fished around Reef Head also found Nannygai and School Sharks.
For Salmon there’s been some excellent fishing of Gunyah Beach where there are Salmon up to 4kg, Greenly and Convention beaches also have some good fishing for Salmon up to 4kg. Lure fishing has been again popular with the Daiwa Saltiga Over There Stick Bait’s being excellent but also the Jabbers Moxie Metals and many of the Nomad Lures like the Ridge Backs and Chug Norris Poppers.
Port Lincoln
For land-based fishers the Squid is still hard going with very few around, those working the Squid spots are only reporting one or two Squid per session and there aren’t too many other reports to talk about.
Boat fishers are fishing better with some decent Whiting catches. The North Shore has been good and there are fish also around Boston Island and some in the Proper, some of these fish have been reported to measure 48cm which is a great fish for in the bays. The Squid are also hard going but are there.
Down the Passage you won’t have any trouble finding some fish or Squid as it’s fishing very well as it has been all winter. Just about all areas down here are firing and Thistle Island has been really good as well. Whiting, Tommies, Red Mullet, Trevally, Snook and Squid can all be found down there. Snapper are a problem in some areas and can be very thick and if you find them it’s just best to move around.
Offshore reports consisted of just Nannygai and there are plenty of them out there south of Williams and Thistle Island. For Salmon there’s plenty along the Sleaford Coast in the national park and you can only expect the Salmon fishing to get better with spring approaching. The fish here are mostly in 3-4kg range and they have been consistently that size all winter.
Tumby Bay
The Whiting fishing here has been very good and fishing the closer grounds from right in front of town down to Bolingbroke have all been fishing very well. There’s more Squid here than Port Lincoln but not how it should be. You will also find some Snook trolling lures like the Daiwa Double Clutches.
Out at the Group there is Whiting in reasonable numbers and good-sized fish, Snook, Trevally, Red Mullet and Squid. In some of the deeper areas behind the Group there are Gummy Sharks but Snapper can be a problem.
