The fishing has been very good in the last week even with the windy weather but we have had a few good days where most can get out on the water. The Tuna season is now in full swing and looks to be going well from Coffin Bay to Streaky Bay. There now some much better sized fish around and schools at Port Lincoln are also getting much better.
There’s also a lot of Sharks around again this week, mostly Bronze Whalers but also Mako’s and Hammerheads depending on where you fish. Blue crabs also are starting to show up in better numbers from a number of areas and there’s Garfish and there’s plenty of those out there.
Here’s what has been getting caught this week.
Elliston
Mostly offshore news this week with Tuna, Samson Fish and Kingfish the main headlines. West of Flinders Island is the best area to fish for these fish and there’s been some good fish there. Kingfish pushing 30kg and Samsons around the same size all mostly caught on jigs, the JT jigs have been doing the most damage on these fish. Just look for birds or troll around the reef systems in the area for the Tuna. There’s plenty of good nannygai on the reefs along with Sharks and few Blue Morwong.
Streaky and Scaele Bay has similar fishing for the offshore fish. Sharks are also plentiful off of the rock and beach areas in the Elliston to Streaky area with some good ones to 10 feet landed this week. If fishing off of the rocks for these big ones you can’t go past the 9-foot Shimano Bronzie Basher rod for these Sharks, it will make the job much easier of landing these big ones. The surf beaches past Ceduna are also loaded with Sharks with Bronzies and Gummies the main catch and there are a few good Mulloway being caught also.
Coffin Bay
There’s no problem catching a feed of fish here with good numbers of Salmon Trout and Tommies in the bays. There’s also Garfish, Snook, a few Whiting and the odd Flathead. Gummy and Bronze Whaler Sharks can also be caught if you’re after something a bit bigger, but you will have to put up with a few Eagle Rays. Both land-based fishers and boat fishers can all get in on the action.
Farm Beach has no shortage of Whiting and Garfish and reports have been quite good and bag limits have been caught very quickly when the fish are on, most areas are fishing quite well. Salmon Trout, Tommies, Snook are the other fish well worth chasing here.
Offshore Tuna schools have been turning up some bigger fish, the better sized Tuna have been schooled up at Rocky and Hummocks and these fish are around 15kg mark which is much better than what was around before. There are also fish off Point Sir Isaacs to Reef Head but not many off of Little Rocky suggesting these fish have just moved. Divers seem to be the best lures right now with Zerek Speed Donkeys, Rapala X Raps and Halco Laser Pros in the Napalm and Dirty Harry colours are all the best lures to have out. Around the islands also there are Kingfish, Samsons and Sharks but on the reefs Nannygai have been hit and miss, some reports have been very lean and others have cleaned up.
For Salmon Gunyah, Almonta and Golden Island sound like the best area for Salmon along the coast. There’s some good reports with some Salmon pushing 4kg but most are around 3kg. There’s plenty of big Bronze Whaler Sharks here also.
Port Lincoln
The main wharf is the best area to fish land based at the moment with a good variety of fish around. Snook, Tommies, Whiting, Garfish, Mackerel and Salmon all there and biting. There’s fish around at the other jetties but not in the same numbers.
For boat fishers Snook can be caught in many areas within the bays. Garfish also are around in good numbers and spread out within the bays. Whiting have been a bit slower but you will still find them scattered within the bays., there’s no real standout areas for the Whiting at the moment. Squid are best around Boston Island. Blue Crabs are showing up in better numbers but there are lots of small ones so make sure you have a Crab measurer. The Proper is one of the better areas but they can be found in many other areas also.
Down the coast McLarens, Taylors and Thistle Island are the best areas for Whiting and there are also Garfish, Snook and some Squid down there. The Vexed Bottom Micro Meats have been once again great on the Whiting.
Offshore fishing has been good with good numbers of Tuna sitting on the Cabbage Patch, there is plenty of fish there around the 15kg mark. Kingfish and Samson fish can also be caught there. There’s some big Nannygai on the reefs taking a liking to the Nomad Squidtrex lures, Blue Morwong, big Sweep and Trevally also.
Salmon can be caught along Sleaford with schools of fish scattered along the coast. Most are around 3kg and are closely followed by big Bronze Whaler Sharks.
Tumby Bay
The Group has receiver the best reports with good numbers of decent sized Whiting, Garfish, Snook, Trevally, Tommies and a few Squid. Spilsby and Revesby islands sounded like they were the best areas to have a fish.
In closer there also some good fishing with Whiting, Tommies, Snook and Garfish the best fish to target.
Port Neill and Arno Bay
Yellowfin Whiting are in good numbers along the beaches in the area right now. The beaches north of Port Neill all the way to Cowell is the area worth fishing. Many of these fish have been taken lures like the Daiwa Slippery Dogs and the Jabbers Honcho Stick baits but you can also catch plenty on bait like Prawns.
Boat fishers have a mixture Whiting, Garfish, Snook and a few Squid. At Cowell there’s Crabs enough for a feed, Whiting and some Garfish. Small Bronze Whaler Sharks and Hammer Heads are also there on the hot calm days outside of the harbour.
