Most of the wild weather looks to be behind us now and more stable weather looks to be coming in. The winds are dropping off now and hopefully we finally get a good chance to get there and catch a few fish.
Reports have been a lot fewer this week but now that we are in the Autumn period which is regarded as the best time of the year for most fish you can expect some good fishing.
Here’s what has been biting this week.
Elliston
Good fishing offshore for Nannygai, Samson fish, Kingfish and a few Tuna. The best areas are west of Flinders Island on the remote reef systems. If you after Kingfish trolling the big Nomad DTX 200 minnows around the reefs is a good way of locating the schools of Kingfish and then dropping jigs like the JT jigs down will also fire up the fish. The reefs of Scaele Bay also have been very good for the big Nannygai and there’s also some Tuna, Blue Morwong and Mako Sharks.
Elliston also has some nice Whiting and Snook from the inshore grounds and so does Streaky Bay with the added bonus of Blue Crabs and Flathead from the beaches. Surf fishing reports have been lean around Elliston and Streaky but there have been some good Mulloway caught recently on the beaches past Fowlers Bay. Some groups have caught fish up to 30kg and plenty of smaller fish, heaps of Sharks and some big Salmon.
Coffin Bay
Start looking for Flathead now there should be some good fish starting to show up around in the bays and also along the national park, the bigger afternoon tides are what you need and there are a good range of lures to use for the Flathead but soft plastics are best and some of the good lures to try are the Jackson Bone Baits, Nomad Prawns and the Panic Stations Mullet, these just work but there are plenty of other ones that work as well. The next few months is the prime time around Coffin Bay.
Whiting fishing also has been good and the next few months will also be excellent with good catches reported this week off of the rocks around Coffin Bay. Plenty have been caught on the Z-Man plastic worms and also the Vexed Micro Meat jigs. Salmon Trout, Tommies, Snook and Garfish can also be caught. Gummy Sharks also are in good numbers and there’s plenty around in the bays. Eagle Rays can be a problem but that’s just a part of fishing for gummies.
Farm Beach has been excellent for Whiting with catches caught in no time and there’s Snook, Salmon Trout, Garfish and Tommies. A few Squid can also be found drifting over weed beds. Coles point has a few Nannygai and some School Sharks. Tuna seem to be best at Kruse Rock and Rocky Island, they can be hit and miss and sometimes not willing to take a lure but when they are on some of the lures worth using are the Halco Laser Pros in the Dirty Harry and Naplam colours which Kingfish will also take, Zerek Speed Donkeys, Samaki Pace Makers and the Buku Skirts in the green or pink colours.
There’s some reef fishing for Nannygai and School Sharks out from Point Sir Isaacs also.
For Salmon Greenly Beach has been the best area but you can also expect to find Salmon at Gunyah and Almonta beaches.
Port Lincoln
Off the jetties there are some small Kingfish, a few Squid, Tommies,Ssnook and a few Whiting and at the town jetty there has been some Blue Crabs caught as well, the next few months are probably the best for jetty fishing around Port Lincoln. There will also be some W0hiting off of the rocks at Tulka and also along the North Shore, use longer rods 9 foot plus to be able to cast out further to the Whiting spots, will increase your catch rate. we have a great selection in store to choose from if this kind of fishing interests you.
For boat fishers most of the news has been about the Blue Crabs with many areas around Port Lincoln now firing, it is hard to pin point an area right now that is the best as so many areas have Crabs and this is one of the better years that we have had for while.
One thing to remember is that these are big Crabs and you don’t have catch many for a good feed, and many fishers now are only catching what they need for their immediate usage, there are more and more fishers out changing yearly to a more sustainable fishing methodology which is good to see. There are some fishers out there also catching other fish in the bays, Snook are the best in years with so many around, Garfish, a few Whiting and a few Squid were also reported in the bays.
Down the coast Whiting again are best at Taylors and Thistle Island, there’s plenty down there and some of the fish are better than 50cm. Offshore shore reports have been a little lean this week but all the usual fish should be out there. Nannygai have been quite good on some of the reefs with many caught on the Vexed Bottom Meat jigs, there’s Blue Morwong, School Sharks, Kingfish and Samson fish.
Tuna have been lean but there should be schools of Tuna coming through again and settling in somewhere.
Salmon are schooled up in big numbers along the Sleaford coast but often herded up by Sharks out of casting range. There are little breakaway schools that are often right in close and can easily be picked off with lures. Some of the better casting lures are the new Buku Flutter Bombs, Jackson Metal Effects and the Arma Flash Harry’s and Nuggets.
Tumby Bay
There’s a few Blue Crabs in the bay and also out from Second Creek. Snook are good also, Garfish and a few Whiting can also be caught in close, there are patches of Squid in decent numbers also but you just have to find them. There are a few Yellowfin Whiting off of the beaches and enough for a feed.
Out at the Group the Whiting fishing has been good with catches of big fish caught regularly. Spilsby sounds like the best area but they can be caught at many other spots as well. There’s plenty of big \Snook out there and some are over 80cm, big Silver Trevally, Tommies, Garfish and some Squid. Gummy Sharks can be caught in the deeper water reef areas but Snapper can be a problem.
Port Neill and Arno Bay
Give the Port Neill jetty a go for Garfish and Snook some decent fish have been caught there. Port Neill’s beaches have also been firing for Yellowfin Whiting and there should also be some Flathead around on these beaches which are lightly fished for Flathead but do hold some rippers.
Boat fishers will find plenty of Garfish and Snook at both areas and also Whiting which should be in good numbers. Some good ones will be around Arno Bay.
