It’s been cold wet and windy mostly during the last week but there has still been quite a lot of fishing. Squid, Whiting and Salmon have been the main targets but there has also been a bit of favourable weather for offshore fishing with a few good offshore reports, something we haven’t had in a while.
Here’s what has been biting over the last week.
Elliston
All Salmon news from here over the last week and seasoned Elliston Salmon fishers have been saying this has been an excellent season so far with plenty of big fish over 5kg caught this winter. Locks Well and Talia Beach have been the best areas for Salmon in the last few weeks.
We have had some concerns from fishers that haven’t caught any fish in the area that the algal bloom affecting other parts of the state must be affecting Elliston, this is simply not true. There is no algal bloom west of Port Lincoln and there is no concern at all. If you are fishing in strong onshore winds with big swell, the fish will not come in close to shore and on those days, it’s best to put the fishing rods away. Plan your trip when the winds are light or blowing offshore and with the swell below 3 metres, you are then in with a very good chance of catching some fish.
Coffin Bay
News has been a bit quieter due to the weather and reports close to town have been very few and far between this week. You be able to catch all the usuals like Whiting, Tommies and Salmon Trout within the bays. Farm Beach has Whiting, Tommies, Salmon Trout, some Snook and some Squid, there are no real standout areas just reports from most good areas but the deeper areas do have better-sized fish, and you are also in with a good chance of hooking up a Gummy or School Shark if you get a good burley trail going.
Offshore reports were ok with some Blue Groper in few areas and also Nannygai and Blue Morwong and those using Vexed Bottom Meat Jigs scored some good fish. For Salmon Greenly and Convention beaches have been the standout areas for good Salmon fishing, bait fishing has been the most popular method but lures will also get a few too, most are good fish 3kg plus.
Port Lincoln
Squid are hard to find but they are around in the bays in small numbers and Whiting catches have been ok for boat fishers fishing along the North Shore and also the Proper. Better fish have been caught at Louth and also down the Passage between Carcase Rocks and Taylors and there’s been some excellent Whiting fishing with good numbers of fish. Squid, Snook and Red Mullet are also in good numbers there, using the Vexed Micro Meat jigs for Whiting will improve your catch rate. Thistle Island is also very good if you want to go down that far with big Squid and plenty of Whiting.
Offshore fishers reported some big Blue Morwong and Nannygai and a few School Sharks can also be caught there. The salmon fishing is excellent in the National Park with some good sized fish some going close to 4kg but most around the 3kg range. Lure fishing has been excellent with Daiwa Saltiga Over There Stick Baits, Jabbers Moxie Metal jigs and Jackson Metal Effect lures very hard to beat.
Tumby Bay/Port Neill/Arno Bay
Reports of Whiting around Tumby Bay have really picked up over the last week suggesting the water has cleared up, there have been reports from in front of town and down to Bolingbroke and also out at the Group some good sized Whiting have been caught in decent numbers.
Squid are still hard going, and they might take some time to move back in. Further up the coast from Port Neill to Lucky Bay there are only a few reports, and this area is affected by the Algae in the water from recent reports. Hopefully as it is further south it will dissipate quickly, and the fishing will restore to what it should be but there are pockets of good water and if you find those areas there should be plenty of fish.
