Fishing reports have slowed up with the colder weather and winter sports now in play. These two factors do not slow down the dedicated fishers out there and many are just getting started. The cold weather brings other good fishing opportunities, and many good fishing areas will have far less fishing pressure which will result in many more fish. Some of the good fishing opportunities on the west coast is the abundance of big Salmon, King George Whiting fishing gets better, Flathead fishing is in its prime and there’s some excellent offshore fishing. Hopefully we see the big 100kg plus Tuna show up this winter.
Here’s what has been biting over the last week.
Elliston
This week there has been Salmon from the beaches with Locks Well and Sheringa the main beaches that have been fished. There should also be Salmon at Talia and Mount Camel beaches. You will also be able to find some big Tommies and Mullet from these beaches and Talia will have a few big Flathead and Gummy Sharks.
Around Elliston off of the beaches around town you can catch a feed of Whiting off of the beaches and the odd Flathead. There will also be some big Squid off the jetty and a few Snook also. Casting Daiwa Double Clutch lures iff of the jetty will most likely get you hooked up to a Snook.
Coffin Bay
There’s been some great Flathead catches reported here with some experienced Flathead fishers catching up to eight good fish in a session. They are spread right throughout the system and you just need to get out there and explore different areas and put in the time to see good results. Soft plastics are the go and the main ones working well are the Arma Paddle Tails, Jackson Bone Baits and the Nomad Prawns, pink and orange colored plastics are the most popular ones.
Whiting can be caught in good numbers and you don’t need a boat, there has been good catches caught off of the rocks and Salmon Trout, Tommies, Snook and a few Garfish can also be caught within the bays. Gummy Sharks are lurking around in bays also at night and aren’t that hard to find if you have a good burley trail for them to sniff out.
Farm Beach is well worth the trip as there are some good catches reported once again this week. Most areas have some good fishing available. Garfish are thinning out a little bit but they can still be caught and most are big ones. Tommies, Salmon Trout and some Snook can also be caught. Coles Point is very good for School Sharks and a few Nannygai in the deeper water.
Offshore reports have dried up this week but when the weather comes good it should be excellent and for Salmon Greenly Beach has been the area with the best reports this week and there are good fish there. Gunyah and Almonta should also be good when the weather allows.
Port Lincoln
Whiting fishing for shore based fishers this week has been ok but should get better by the weekend. The town jetty, Axel Stenross, North Shore and Tulka all have Whiting and most are good sizes. Tommies and Salmon Trout can be caught around town and there’s heaps of Garfish at Tulka off the rocks.
Boat fishing news has mostly come from in the Proper and around Boston Island, there is plenty of Garfish around in the Proper, a few whiting and around Boston Island is much the same. Down the coast Taylors and Thistle Island has been fishing well with plenty of fish down there. Vexed Micro Meat jigs have been slaying the Whiting, you can also fish the odd Gummy Shark around Taylors and there’s some good patches of Snook down there as well.
Offshore reports have been light with only a few from around Williams Island, it seems that area has been invaded again by Snapper of all sizes. It would be best to give this area a miss but there are some good Nannygai there if you can sift through the Snanpper.
For Salmon there’s still plenty at Sleaford when the conditions are good. If you find a school of Salmon, lures are the best option with the Arma Nuggets and Flash Harrys getting the job done on the Salmon. If you don’t find Salmon schools, then go bait, there will still be Salmon roaming the gutters. There’s still plenty of big Bronze Whalers Sharks down there also following the schools of Salmon.
Tumby Bay
Whiting reports are ok but sometimes its slow fishing for them, this is the main breeding month for Whiting, so it is nothing unusual if you experience the slow fishing and this is same for both inshore and out at the Group. There are some good Snook around Tumby in close and some nice Garfish also out at the Group. There are some big Trevally around some of the reefs and islands here and these are an underrated eating fish and are also good fun to catch.
Port Neill and Arno Bay
Yellowfin Whiting are still a top target from the beaches in this area and reports keep coming in but numbers are dropping which is to be expected as we get closer to winter. Salmon can be caught around Lipson Cove and Flathead are also a good target in this area up to Arno Bay.
The Port Neill jetty and the rock areas around Port Neill have some cracker Garfish and are well worth Targeting. Boat news has been slow and the Whiting fishing might also be slow with the spawning season on right now and fishing for them could be very hit and miss.
