It’s that time of the year where many have been waiting for football and netball finals, warmer, longer and sunnier days and more fishing. You’ve got to love this time of year, spring is finally here.
You can expect some excellent fishing from now and week by week the fishing should get better. The Salmon fishing is at it’s best during spring, the Kingfish run is just about to start in many areas, Whiting and Squid are going well, Shark fishers will be getting all the heavy gear ready, many fishers will be starting to get the surf rods dusted off for the Mulloway and school holidays won’t be to far away.
Here’s what has been biting.
Elliston
The Salmon comp has finished but the Salmon fishing is still firing and all the beaches in the Elliston area have been fishing very well. Locks Well and Talia have the best reports. There’s big fish here to 4-5kg and many other beaches further west up to Fowlers Bay are the same with plenty of big fish on offer. As always, pick your weather for Salmon, it’s no good if the wind and swell is up.
At Streaky Bay Squid are reported to be in good numbers with many falling victims to the Shimano Flash Boost jigs and also Venus Bay has Squid also. You will also find some decent numbers of Whiting at Venus Bay.
Coffin Bay
Reports in the bays have mostly consisted of some Whiting, Salmon Trout and Tommies. Over the next few weeks it should improve substantially with the water starting to warm up and there will be more fish coming through. Farm Beach has been good for some and bad for others but generally there’s decent numbers of fish there and around the sandhills has been good. If your one of the struggling fishers try using Pilchard burley, Whiting love that stuff and the Vexed Micro Meat Jigs attract and entice the Whiting to bite better. There ‘s also Salmon Trout, Tommies and some Squid around there that can be caught and in the deeper water areas there are School Sharks and Gummy Sharks also lurking around taking baits.
Salmon fishing has been excellent off of Gunyah Beach and also Almonta. Greenly and Convention Beaches also hold Salmon. You can expect Salmon to 4kg off many of these beaches taking both lures and baits.
Port Lincoln
The jetties and land-based areas are still fairly quiet around town, just a few Squid here and there. The main wharf will start to fire up soon with Tommies, Salmon Trout and some Whiting, give it a few weeks and it should be pretty good.
Boat fishers are finding some good Whiting along the North Shore, boston Island and the Proper should start to fish much better in the next few weeks. The best fishing is down the Passage with plenty of Whiting down there. From Carcase Rocks right down to Thistle Island you will find Whiting on all the major Whiting spots. Squid and Snook can also be caught there, the Squidding can be quite good in a number of areas.
Offshore only a handful of reports with Nannygai, Blue Morwong and School Sharks caught south of Williams Island.
For Salmon along the Sleaford Coast is fishing really well right now with plenty of fish there. The whole coast in the Wanna to Wreck Beach is fishing well for Salmon to 4kg, lure fishing has been popular with Daiwa Over There stick baits, Jabbers Moxie metals and Arma Twist lures just some of the best ones.
Tumby Bay
Mostly Whiting reports from the Group and also Bolingbroke, there are some big Whiting at both areas. Squid are getting better but still much slower than what they should be, there is also Snook, Tommies, Red Mullet and some Garfish around on the inshore grounds at Tumby.
Further up the coast from Port Neill to Cowell the news has been still slow but worth a crack for Whiting, there will still be some areas that are pretty good.
